Re: Flag or standard for 3rd Tenn Mounted Infantry

Hi John,

The only surviving flag with any connection to Vaughn's/Lillard's 3rd Tennessee Infantry is this:

Co. I, Rough & Readies - Meigs County Militia - mexican War era flag that seems also to have been
used initially by this company in the secession era of the Civil War - Tennessee State Museum, Coll. # 89.190

There ia an 8 star First National also in the TSM (#73.10) that is listed as being from the 3rd Tennessee but not spcified as to which one. Considering that there is also a FN flag from Brown's 3rd TN, this flag MIGHT be from Vaughn's/Lillard's regiment. Further research is needed.

The regiment may have carried up to three flags - their first, whihc was probably surrendered at Vicksburg, that flag's replacement and maybe one other later in 1864 when they were finally mounted.

Without any documentation from any of the sources I have seen for this unit, we can only speculate.
