The soldiers at Rock Island who took the oath of allegiance and enlisted in the Union Army for frontier service were listed as unassigned US volunteers first. Later they were assigned to one of two regiments, 2nd Regiment US Volunteer Infantry, and 3rd Regiment US Volunteer Infantry. Search for your soldier in those two and maybe you will find him on one of those rolls. I think there were six regiments in all but these two were recruited from Rock Island.
