The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Tenn. 27th Infantry Regiment - -

Betty --

You are correct -- many more Confederates who died during the war are buried in unmarked graves than otherwise. Many more are buried beneath a marker that reads, 'Unknown'.

The State of Tennessee seems to have provided you with the National Archives service file of this soldier. You may not be aware that military service files and pension applications can be ordered here, which helps to keep these message boards in operation.

Let's be clear -- the regiment was breaking camp at Henderson in order to march to Columbus KY. If the man in question became ill along the line of march, it's possible he was left in private quarters along the way. It's also possible that he was able to travel with the command all the way to Columbus and died there.

However, an illness lasting more than two weeks would not be unusual. If that was the case, he remained with other sick and convalescents at Henderson and died there.
