Do you know what happens to a flag that is captured? Is it returned to the original regiment, or is it retained by the captors?

The colors of the Eighth and Ninth Tennessee Cavalry under General Gillem were captured October 12, 1864 in Greeneville by the Confederate forces under General Vaughn. Would they have been returned?

Also, how do you identify the color bearers for a regiment? The buglers are usually identified on the roster as such, but how do you know who the color bearers were?
