The colors of the Thirteenth Cavalry were captured at Bull's Gap in November 1864 by Confederate forces under General Vaughn. From History of the Thirteenth Cavalry by Scott and Angel: "The losses in this disastrous affair were heavy, including 6 pieces of artillery.....colors, and 150 prisoners"
