Re: Capt. Marshall T.Polk, Polk's Tenn. Battery

RE Polk...What was the "arrest" warrant issued for while still in Confedrate service? I know one thing,he was totally anti Bragg.Where did you get that info ? Also, Col. Polk was personal friends with Stephen D. Lee and Forrest...he knew Lee from West Point.Col. Polk graduated from West Point in 1852.He was raised by his uncle,President James K.Polk.....he was present at Belmont,Shiloh, where Braggs piecemeal attacks ultimely led to Polks Battery losing their infantry support and destruction of the battery,Stones River,Shelbyville,Chickamauga, Okolona,Brices Crossroads and Battle of Harrisburg (Tupelo). After Shiloh,he survived capture and leg amputation.Paroled in late"62",he was promoted by Jefferson Davis and served on the staff of Gen.Leonidas Polk. After Polks death,he was appointed to command Aberdeen,MS. district in North Mississippi. He was ordered by Gen. Stephen D.Lee to take 400 troops on a train to intercept elements of Rousseaus Raid in North Alabama directly after Battle of Tupelo.Col. Marshall T. Polk was elected treasurer of State of Tennessee in late 1870,s. The charge of embezzlement against him was for $400.00.00. Quite a sum in comparision to todays value of the dollar. The money was supposedly invested in silver mines in Mexico but we have to remember that times in Tennessee and the rest of the South in post "war years" were very difficult and much animosity existed towards the Union and their interferrence with state and local affairs. Col. Polk, from letters read, was a very generous man. He was not a "high roller" nor a "flamboyant character. He lived a modest life with his family in Bolivar and Nashville,TN.He had many, many ex-Confedrate friends that he had served with and was always there to help a Confederate veteran in need. Col. Polk,I personally think, got caught up in the post war reconstruction insanity that many other Southern political officials were caught up in.Look at your history books....many other elected ex-Confederate state officials were accused of embezzlement during this time period. Alabama,Kentucky just to name a few...was it part of a large conspiracy or just individual acts by the ex-Rebels.....who knows? Col. Polk supposedly had a heart attck in 1884 at the age of 53. He is buried in Polks Cemetery in Bolivar,TN. Some people think that he didnt die in "84" and lived a long prosperous life in Mexico. He had many, many friends in the ex-Confederate hierarchy. Deo Vindice Col. Polk !! Its got the makins of a great book.....Frank Wood
