I agree Joe...the old adage about not knowing a man untill you walk a mile in his shoes, applies here.
I had a relitive who took the oath at Point Lookout, joined the 1st US Vol, then deserted at first opportunity, and returned to his Unit
at Petersburg. It seems he was afraid at the surrender, and tried to slip away, but was caught down the road at Lynchburg. Lucky for him the Union army didn't have modern technology. which would have ID him.
