One of the major problems faced by the Confederacy was that of disorganization. By that I mean members of one command leaving to go home or joining another somewhere else. Obviously this meant that there were fewer officers and men in front-line units to do the actual fighting. Senior officers like Lee and Johnston considered these men deserters and took every possible means to have them returned to their proper command or brought before a court martial for punishment. Men llike this hastened the downfall of the Confederacy.
