Dear Norma,

Company "E" of the 29th Texas Cavalry was recruited in Denton, TX. Company "E" had formerly been Otis G. Welch's Company and earlier was Company "I" of the 1st Choctaw and Chickasaw Mounted Rifles. Your ancestor also appears on the rolls of this unit. In late 1862 members of the Indian units who were "white" were transferred to "all white" units, such as, the 29th Texas Cavalry.

Due to your ancestors service in Welch's Company and with the 1st Choctaw and Chickasaw Mounted Rifles, he would have participated in the battles of Round Mountain, Chustenalah and Chusto-Talasah, all in the Indian Territory and finally, the battle of Pea Ridge, AR.

You may also want to post your query on the Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board for additional information regarding his service prior to becoming a member of the 29th Texas Cavalry.
