Re: Randal's Regiment of Texas Lancers

Ms. Nobles,

The lancers at ValVerde were primarily members of Company B of the 5th Texas Mounted Volunteers also known as the 5th Texas Cavalry. Only about 40-50 men actually made the charge into the Union troops of Dodd's Coloradoans. It was a slaughter. Some southern officers wanted to try again ;however, I believe Gen Tom Green ( commanding officer of the 5thTexas Cav) would not let another lancer charge be made after he saw the devastation of the first attack. In fact, I'm fairly sure that the Texans were so disgusted with the results of their one and only lancer charge , that they stacked up the remaining lances and burned them.
Back to your original question about the lancers. In the early part of the war, their were several mounted Texas units that had the name "Lancer" somewhere in their name or nickname; however, the only documented incident of the use of lances in a charge is the 5th Texas Cav at Val Verde.
There may have been an isolated incident of some guy with a lance running down an adversary ;however, I believe Val Verde is the only place where a bona fide lancer charge took place. Hope this helps.
Regards, Craig Morin
