Re: Randal's Regiment of Texas Lancers

Ms Marriott,

In light of Mr Bailey's response to your request , I wanted to clarify to you that my response to you , regarding the 1st Texas Lancers was in reference to that Unit's role in the American Civil War . So often , the names the various Texas mounted units took for themselves in the early part of the Civil War ( I prefer War Between the States) was very similar ( sometimes identical) to the unit names that Texas mounted regiments had in the War with the Mexico . My guess is that the sons of Texas veterans of the war with Mexico wanted to keep some of the same names of units their fathers had served in when they fought the President of Mexico . Also, you still a few old Texas coots around in 1861 who had also fought in the war against the Mexicans and they wanted to use the same names for their new Confederate mounted units. My GGGrandfather was one of those old coots who mounted up again in 1861 to fight the Yankees. He and one of his sons both signed up in 1861. The son was killed at Val Verde, the father survived.
Regards, Craig
