Re: Help with Cureton, 25th Texas Cav

Here is some more information about the 25th Texas Cavalry Regiment that my help.

The regiment was formed in 1861 with most recruits coming from Austin County, Brazos County, and Brazoria County at Camp Nellie on Cedar Bayou near the railhead at Millican Texas. The regiment was placed under command of Col. Clayton Gillespie and joined Walker's Texas Division in late 1862. The 25th Texas Cavalry was detached from Walker's Texas Division and placed under the command of Col. James Deshler and was and sent to Arkansas Post where Col.Deshler and the regiment was captured intact in January 1863. After a prisoner exchange, the 25th Cavalry (dismounted) was in Col. George W. Carter's Texas Lancers for a brief time. In Novermber 1863, Carter's Texas Lancers was broken up and the 25th Texas Cavalry was consolidated with with other regiments and placed in Brig. Gen. H. B. Granbury's Texas Brigade, Maj.Gen. Pat Cleburne's Division, Army of Tennessee.

Granbury's Texas Brigade established a reputation for it's fighting ability that was unsurpassed by any brigade in the Army of Tennessee. Since Pvt. Cureton was buried in the Texas State Cemetery, he must have died while in the Confederate Soldiers Home as allowed by regulations.
