William Johnson Gilbert

Hi there, I am searching for the military unit for Confederate soldier William Johnson Gilbert. He was born August 8, 1841 in Pickens County Alabama and died April 17, 1914 in Causey, Roosevelt Co., NM. The record book of Bedford Forrest Camp #1606, United Confederate Veterans lists his unit as Co. H, Parson’s Reg. Cav., Harris Brig. As far as I can figure, this may be the one listed on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System as 12th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Parson's Mounted Volunteers). Only J. A. Gilbert is on their roster. The only William J. Gilbert on the CWSSS is listed in the 43rd regiment, Alabama Infantry, Company K, Rank In: 3rd Lieutenant Rank Out: Private. Although William Johnson Gilbert was born in Alabama, in 1850 he was in Newton, Mississippi, and he is on the 1860 census in Taos, Navarro County, Texas. He married in 1866 in Gonzales County TX, and is on the 1870 census in Precinct 4, Gonzales, Texas. How likely is it that he ran home to Alabama from Texas when he hadn't lived in Alabama since he was a small child just to serve in the Civil War and then came back to Texas? This one is a real head-scratcher for me, so any help is greatly appreciated! :o( Cathey
