Hi Mike,
That goes to share that not everything on a pension application is reliable when they're relying on the memory of loved ones. No telling where the Bedford Forrest Camp #1606 got information about Gilbert's unit, but it doesn't resemble what it actually turned out to be. His wife thought he enlisted. If not for her remembering that his commanding officer was a man named Scott and your records, I would never have known. She thought he enlisted, but he was drafted. Sometimes it takes a village to give a complete picture, I suppose. The 1860 census has 19 year old William living with his folks and only the father is listed with an occupation of farmer. Maybe he was apprenticed to a miller, but who knows. Is there any way to find a history of Captain James Scott and his Co B 1st Battalion Infantry Texas State Troops? I've searched high and low. I can usually find something, however brief, on the commanding officer, but nothing on Scott nor his unit. I am researching several Confederate soldiers who are buried in my area of Roosevelt County and Curry County NM for New Mexico branch of Sons of Confederate Veterans who have a website that honors veterans buried or killed in NM. Thank you so much for your patience and help. Cathey
