Hi Mike,
The information that you most recently sent is exactly what I need. :o)

Muster Roll dated Feb 2,1864
William Gilbert
Conscript
Capt James Scott's Co B 1st Battln Inf Tex State Troops
Camp Roberts near Bonham,Tex
Remarks: Detailed as Miller

I received the copy of his widow's pension application and she states that he joined the cavalry in Hill County TX under Captain Scott in April 1861 and served during the entire war. She also states that his general was named Puckett. Judge Earl D. Scott who handled her application said that William might have served under Judge Scott's father who was a cavalry captain from Limestone County. But, your records, the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System and Ancestry all place him in 1st Battalion, Texas Infantry, State Troops, Company B. Ancestry shows that he enlisted as a private, but no date of enlistment. I have yet to find any history on Gilbert's unit. Now for the dumb questions. Is the muster roll taken when the unit musters out, and what does the term conscript signify? I sincerely appreciate your help! This has been a tough one for me with so many variations on his name and conflicting information. Thank you so much, Cathey
