J. A. Gilbert, age 21, enlisted as a Private in Captain W. G. Veal's Company (Ellis Rangers), Parsons' Regiment Texas Volunteers** October 28, 1861 at Hempstead,Texas, in addition to one pay voucher, the only other record in his file is a voucher for 17 coffins dated November 4, 1862 at Little Rock, Arkansas in which his coffin was procured on June 17, 1862

**This company was successively designated as Captain Veal's Company, Parson's Regiment Texas Volunteers, Company G and Company F, 12th Regiment Texas Cavalry

W J. Gilbert, 20 year old Farmer, born in Alabama, enlisted as Private in Company K, Young's Regiment Texas INFANTRY** January 22, 1862 at Camp Hebert/Hill County, discharged by reason of disability March 22, 1863, has been unfit for duty the last two months, his discharge certificate records he was born in the state of Mississippi which differs from his Surgeon's Certificate of Disability & age 24

**This regiment completed its organization about February 3, 1862, with ten companies, A to K. It was officially designated the 12th Regiment Texas Infantry but was known in the field as Young's and the 8th Texas Infantry and it was finally patrolled as of the latter designation.

William J. Gilbert enlisted as Private in Company K, 43rd Alabama Infantry, May 14, 1862 at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, elected 2nd Lieutenant same date, resigned July 22, 1862/January 2, 1863, recorded present on the Jan./Feb.1865 muster roll, captured at Farmville, Va, April 6, 1865, sent to Newport News, Va via City Point, Va arriving April 14, subscribed to the Oath of Allegiance to the US June 24, 1865, resident of jefferson, County, Alabama

A handwritten Special Order No. 9, dated July 20,1862 reads:

"The resignations of Lt. ______ Davis and W.J. Gilbert, Co. K 43rd Regt Ala. Vols, having been accepted, they are hereby ordered to be sent back to ranks if between the ages of 18 & 35."

There follows a two page regarding his resignation dated March 2, 1863 containing a copy of the July 20, 62' order
