Re: Houston graves of Second Texas soldiers

Troy:

If my memory serves me correctly, your GGGrandfather appears to have been a part of the 150 men that Col. Ashbel Smith picked up from the Conscript Camp in Tyler, Texas. Your dates match those of my GGGrandfather exactly. He joined in July/August, 1962, immediately following the birth of my GGrandfather, was sent to a Conscript Camp in Tyler for training, and was eventually picked up by Colonel Ashbel Smith while on a recruiting trip in Texas. The group of 150 men immediately headed toward Vicksburg. Interestingly, Col. Smith wrote that those 150 men were some of the worst he had ever seen and likened them to poor, weak, and infirm released from a hospital. He said there were not but a few good men in the bunch. Most never even made it to Vicksburg!!!

Glad to know your ancestor was another of the good men!!
