Alex Beck's Record says "transferred from Conscript Camp to Co., D. Jan 23, 1863"

I wondered why he enlisted at the age of 33, and with a large Family at the time.
Do you suppose he might have been conscripted? Did Texas have Conscript laws that
early in the War?
