H. A. Hamner, age 34, enrolled as a Captain in Captain H. A. Hamner's Company, 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles* May 23, 1861 at San Antonio, recorded in November as Commanding Company at Post of Fort Clark, Texas, recommended by Gen. J. B. Magruder for Major, Griffins Battalion

* This company was known at various times as Captain Hamner's Company, Captain Roark's Company and Company H, 2nd Regiment Texas Cavalry.

The 2nd Regiment Texas Cavalry (also known as the 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles) was organized May 23, 1861, of companies which had previously been in the State service. (1st) Company F re-enlisted in April, 1972; was furloughed to May 31, 1862, and subsequently became Company I, Morgan's Regiment Texas Cavalry. The remainder of the regiment was re-organized in July, 1862, and (2nd) Company F was organized September 27, 1862.
