Hamner; Capt John Miller Spec S.; Bryan's Cheroke
In Response To: Re: Capt. H. A. Hamner ()

Hugh Keen,
.
I have a few comments and questions about your interesting posting.
.
KEEN: Hamner ended the war as a private in John Miller's company of Bryan's Cherokee Special Services Regt.
.... Comment .... Bourland's Regt had many privates, who were formerly CSA officers, and yes, many in Bourland's Regt. were over age 40.
.
KEEN: I am trying to find out how those two crossed paths.
.... Comment .... 1864 Nov 15.....Formation of Griffin’s 21st Infantry Regt. ... W.H. Griffin’s Battn TX Infantry of six compaines was broken up. Four companies were consolidated with six companies of the A.W. Spaight’s 11th Cav. and Inf. Battn. to form Griffin’s 21st Inf. Regt. The other two companies were transferred to Joseph Bates’ 13th Inf. See my web page:

.
KEEN: Capt John Miller's CSA service
... Comment .... This John Miller was first in Capt J.M. Bryan's 1st Cherokee Partisan Ranger Battn org. Jul 30, 1862, Pvt John Miller; ..... Col. Adair's 2d Cherokee Mtd Vols, Capt John Miller in Co's E and A; ... Wells' Battn Co E; .... then lastly Col J.M. Bryan's 2nd Cherokee Regt Battn, Special Services (found in reel entitled "Second Creek Mtd Vols and Cherokee Mtd Vols") ... Please feel free to make corrections to my Wells' web page.

.
KEEN: H.A. Hamner may have had a connection with Well's although there is no record of such.
.... Comment .... It's no news that many names weren't recorded, esp. toward the end of the War. See my Wells Battn roster (20 linear feet of stuff) and my "Additional soldiers" not listed in the archival records of Bourland's Regt.

.
KEEN: A hand full of men including John Greener and the Vancleave brothers followed Hamner from the Pyron's 2nd Mtd. Rifles to Griffin's Bn. to Well's Regt. (possibly), all ending up in John Miller's Co. with Bryan. I am trying to figure out how all this took place and who else is involved. ..... Comment ...... (1) Try A.W. Spaight's unit (not to be confused with J.W. Speight of the 15th TX Infantry). .... Ha Ha, VanClay makes sense if you're looking for VanCleave. See my Pyron's 2d Cavalry web page.

.
Am particularly interested in his activities between July 1, 1864 and the close of the war.
.... Comment .... My mantra has been, I study the last 1-1/2 year of the War on the North and West Frontier and I need help.
.
Keep up the good work.
