Bill, I forgot to mention Allen G. Hatley's book, The First Texas Legion. It is not the best on the Brigade but it does provide insite. Politically it cast too much hate at Sul Ross, and glorifies Whitfield. John Wilkins Whitfield organized a company of Cavalry in February of 1861 according to Hatley. He had been a Lieutenant Colonel in the Mexican War and lived in LaVaca County Which had only 500 plus people. Look for incorrect data and statements, but it has a lot of information.

George Grissom in his diary mentions the Legion and 27th often in his daily writings.

After July 1864 there are very few records. Many were destroyed after the war, some lost and a couple of trunks belonging to Sul Ross were ripped open by Yankee soldiers in Alabama, right at the end of the war. Some of these records were recovered, but not all. All the soldiers of the South were considered prisoners by May of 1864 and required a parole to go home. A soldiers records will usually specify whether he was incarcerated at a prison. My GGF was captured at Hatchie Bridge and paroled at Iuka a few days later. He had broke his arm in the battle. Many ignored the parole and went home. My Great Grandfather Robert Arthur Nolan drifted up to Winona, MS and married an Indian girl there. He lived there until 1870 and then moved to Elkton, Giles, TN. His brother James Tyre Nolan/Nolen went straight to Elkton and married in 1865 to a Lucy Cates. These two former Texas Rangers and 6th Texas Cavalrymen were born in Lebanon. I visited that area and Columbia a couple of years ago. Went to Thompkin's Station and Franklin. The Cemetery at the Plantation has a character that is hard to deasribe. I now want to go to Iuka to visit the mass Grave there that is home for many 3rd and 27th Soldiers.

The Whitfield - Ross Texas Cavalry Brigade link below has the historical data an rosters for the 27th. Click on it if you have not.
