Re: 27th Tx Cav, Co. A, Pvt; gaping holes in resea

Organization:

Field and Service, 4 Colonels and 32 men from all units.

Company A was one of the newly recruited companies that came to the 27th in 1862. It ended up Company A because Whitfield's old company did not want to be "A". As stated by Bill the Soldiers were from Dangerfield and Titus County. With E.R. Hawkins, Colonel; 3 captains and a total of 127 men on the roster.

Company B was origionally organized in Hunt County. It had only one other captan and a total of 103 men.

Company C was one of the companies attached at Pea Ridge. Colonel Broocks came from this company. It had 2 captains and 156 men. It came from St Augistine County.

Company D was also one of the old companies from Whitfield's Battalion. It had two Captains and 171 men. Colonel Norsworth from this company and from Jasper County.

Company E was recruited in Red River County. It had one Captain and 112 men,

Company F was recruited in Red River County. It had two Captains and 126 men.

Company G was recruited in Paris, Lamar County, and had 2 Captains and 108 men.

Company H was recruited in Clarksville, Red River County. It had 2 Captains and 86 men.

Company I was recruited in Titus County, had 1 Captain and 105 men.

Company K was one of the origonal companies and had 3 Captains and 118 men from Lavaca County.

Company L was recruited in Clarksville, Titus County had 3 Captains and 67 men.

Company M was recruited in Halletsville had 1 Captain and 119 men.

Company N was recruited in Dangerfield had one Captian and 69 men.

There has been questions about the number of companies in the 27th. From the Muster Roster there are 13 but two qre small and may have been combined early. This is conjecture, but many of the men had two or more company assignemnts. There were a normal complement of officers and NCOs in each company. The fact that the unit took three big hits. One at Iuka, one at a Hatchie Bridge and one in Tennessee at Spring Hill did affecdt its organization. Why it was called a Legion is left for us all to wonder about. Apparently Whitfield liked it and the troops used it. The 27th operated like the other three regiments. Its task were not different, and it performed well in battle. The unit was paroled in Alabama along with the rest of the Brigade in May of 1865.

This is a work in progress. Nothing is firm on the rosters of the 27th. I wish they were. Life would be easier. There is a master roster for the 27th and then a breakout for each company. The last three wer developed from the master roster by using any designation for l, M, or N on a soldiers record. I hope to soon to go through all records of the 27th. Note that most of the men came from the north eastern part of the state, which was better farmed and settled.
