Joe, Appreciate this. All the records that I checked for Company K say mustered in Arkansas. It is likely that Company K was recruited in St Agustine. The company was the old Company D of Whitfield's Battalion. I have notes some place that say which company Whitfield commanded and recruited in Lavaca. Spent a lot of time last night trying to resolve that. I need to take a sample of troops from each company and run them against the census and then check the county muster records. Then we would know for sure. Problem is 6500 soldiers and 43 Companies and 5 F&S leads a man to many brick walls. Thus my last paragraph last night.

Records for the battalion are sparce. Some say he had 4 companies and some say 5. One was from Arkansas. Whitfield received a trade ??? which gave him another Texas Company for the Arkansas company which went to an Arkansas Regiment. Whitfield ended up with 13 companies in May 1862, according to the records. I find nothing for Companies M and N after 1862 except for some promotions. That may have been some book cooking to make more officers?????

Then by May 1864 the attrition began to take affect and companies were disolved. by the fall of Atlanta, Regiments were dowwn to 250 men. There were a few enlistments in Georgia, but not enough. The 27th took the brunt of Kilpatrick's raid. They were on the right flank of the Army, which I have not figured out, unless Wheeler was off on an action. Kilpatrick ran through the companies of the 27th on picket. A small detachment retreated in front of him, until the brigade came from some distance. Some time back I had a Qurry about the 6th Texas being on the east side of Atlanta, and I said I had no knowledge. This action might put them there. Regiments would set up in front of Kilpatrick's Division and try to slow him down. When almost overrun, they would pull out and another regiment would be ready behind them to take their place. They then raced parallel to the raid and set up farther down the track. The 27th had to loose a lot of men in that 5 day raid. It had happened before in the McCook raid, but the Texas Brigade captured a lot of Sharp repeating carbines and benifited from that action. But they ran out of amunition and returned to using pistols during the Kilpatrick raid.
