Re: 2nd Texas Partisan Rangers vs 2 Partisan Range

James: Wow. That is some great information! Unfortunately, it only confuses me more, because my Great Grandfather William H Fleming/Flemming did not have the middle name of Hord. His was Henry. I thought I was being prudent when I used the initials instead of his full name, because most of the military records either refer to him as Wm H Fleming, W H Flemming, etc., and I have queried the other way many times over the past few years to no avail, so thought maybe I'd use them the way they appear in military records (Trans-Mississippi/34th Texas Cav/Alexander Almerine/2nd Texas Partisan Rangers). My ancestor's middle name was Henry (proven), so either NARA has sent me incorrect military records, or? Do you think there is an outside chance that William Hord Fleming was his father, who has been my brick wall for so long? I have personally been to my William Henry's grave in Neosho, Newton (formerly McDonald) County, Missouri, in 2002. His obit also states that he was very active in civic matters, etc., but I can't find any articles about it. He died in Oklahoma where he spent the last few months of his life at his daughter Carol's home (Ladora died there six years later) - both were taken back to Neosho for burial in the "family plot", but his first wife (Mary Emma Hamlin/Hamblin) died in Texas, and I have yet to find her grave. She died young, when my grandfather Claude Moore Fleming and his brother John V. Fleming (of Kansas City at the time of their father's death) were small boys. That's when "my" William removed to Missouri.. to drown his sorrows and find a place to raise his boys (confirmed by three granddaughters/Claude's children). He subsequently met his second wife, Ladora Combs nee Timmonds, a widow with children of her own in McDonald County, where he had gone into the resort business ("Riverside Inn") near Noel with his son John Vincent Fleming. My mother used to work at the resort during summer vacations from school, and relayed many wonderful memories of the place to us as children. My husband and I also visited the property on the trip mentioned above, and it was just as she described it, even down to the cabins in the treetops with the hinged walls. It is interesting to note that William and Ladora's daughter Carol (later married Clyde Pool/Tulsa, Collinsville area of OK) used the double "m" in her spelling of the Fleming name. So also does some of the military records. As now, there were people recording and registering names who could not spell.. or could they? Carol's use of the double "m" seems to have been voluntary. Maybe I have been given the wrong military records, but I laid out the information on the NARA app, so I don't see how they could be too terribly far wrong, and everything jells with the engagements mentioned in his obituary. I have been unable to obtain a death certificate for William. Must have been lost in the shuffle between OK and MO when he died (1924). I was able to get one for Ladora. They had a daughter named Hallie Fleming, who died in her early twenties (not stated, but presumed of typhoid, as there was an epidemic at the time of her death), who is buried near William in the Neosho IOOF plot. I did not find Ladora's grave there. The other natural daughter of William Fleming and second wife Ladora was Nell Wiley nee Fleming, also of the same area of Oklahoma, where several of the members of the family seem to have removed, but I am quite certain of their Texas origins. They were related to the Cozarts of Arkansas through Mary Emma's sister, who married into that family (my late mother's hand written notes..). I think I would have heard something more of that in my life before now though. My mother always said (and noted) she thought Mary Emma to have been buried near Sweetwater, Texas. My mother's sister was named after her with the exception of the reversal of the name order.. ie, Emma Mary rather than Mary Emma. I've tried them all.. This family also has ties to Colorado, as my grandparents were married in Denver in 1910 while on a trip there. I have the original picture postcard sent to her father from there. Also a photo I believe to be of Claude and his brother taken at a studio in Fort Worth. I cannot think of anyone else it could be other than John V., and it is not detailed on the reverse, but no mistaking my grandfather in it. Do you think we are talking about the same Fleming family? Sounds like it might not be the same ones. What do you think, and if so, where is the connection? It's been a mystery for me for a long time, and I haven't been able to move forward from William and Ladora. I have communicated with Ladora's grand (great grand?)son some months back, who inherited a bunch of their personal papers and was going through them, but we seem to have fallen through the cracks with that. I want to finish this line for the grandkids. Thanks so much for your efforts. I really appreciate it!
