"Most importantly, contact the Texas State Archives in Austin. Attention:Donally Brice.Request a search of ALL Files."

Does this cost anything to send a request to them? I paid the fee and filled out a form when I sent a request to the Texas Ranger Museum. I will look into the archives for sure. I now have the book Texas Rangers Service Records 1847-1900. Which has a few possibilities, but not as captains. This does not rule them out yet. They could how rejoined and that document is lost. I have been posting in several different places on the Internet hoping to get lucky and find a family member with info. I live in Mississippi and when possible I will be heading in the other direction for any trips. So for now anyway, I can't visit any place in Texas. I hope to some day but in person is impossible right now. I have been researching any possible place by keyboard, bring me here. My GGG grandfather was a soldier in the 26th Mississippi, but this is the first time for me researching a Texas Ranger. I am not related to captain J.W. Clark, but I feel I need to spend the time to research him. I love to do research and maybe some day will be able to tell his story.

Thank you both for your replies!
