I see you are on the trail of Captain John Clark,San Augustine Mounted Gunmen,San Augustine Co.,Republic of Texas. Nominated by Houston for the New Regiment of Rangers:June 12,1837.

If this is your man the Texas Archives will have much fascinating information on this fellow. In addition to perhaps the Texas General Land Office. The Panic of 1837 created a 10 year depression throughout North America. The Republic did not have cash to pay its soldiers but it did have millions of acres of land.
