I am researching Richard Byrd who as in Company D 22nd Texas (Merrick's Regiment) aka "1st Indian Regiment" and in 1865 he was hospitalized and died in Houston General Hospital in Houston, Texas of pneumonia. in 1869 Richards Will was probated stating that the only known heir was his daughter Elizabeth Byrd who married Thomas Proctor. There are only two families that I know of in Hunt County, Texas which means he was likely the son or James M "Jim" Byrd and Elizabeth Bevers-Byrd or Able Byrd and Esther Enloe-Byrd. I believe this unit was also referred to as "Hunt County Rebels". Also, my line James M Jim Byrd & Elizabeth Bevers had a son Samuel Byrd who likely served in this same unit and I cannot find him after the 1860 census living in his parents household.
I am directly descended from James M Jim Byrd and Elizabeth Bevers via their daughter Sarah Frances Byrd-Shelton who married John Elbert Shelton (my maternal line). I also strongly believe that Able Byrd (who married Enloe) and James Byrd (who married Elizabeth Bevers) are BYRD related but needing to prove it. If anyone on this thread has information on eithe or both families please email me at lyndapfrench@gmail.com
