An interesting item appears in, History of Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia 1748-1920, by William C. Pendleton (Richmond: W.C. Hill Printing Company, 1920), p. 652. It states the section of the county within a two mile radius of Falls Mills contributed 37 men to the Confederate army, of whom 11 joined the 16th Virginia. Most were said to have been small farmers or the sons of small farmers. These men are all listed. Included on the list are Elihue Compton, wounded at Gettysburg, and Ballard P. Compton, wounded at Moorefield on 7 August 1864.
