I am looking for some information on several ancestors who were in the 16th Virginia Cavalry. They were in Company I. Their names are Floyd, John Chapman and Lewis McDonald. Floyd and John C. Were captured by Gen. Hunter's forces on July 9/10 1864 near Harper's Ferry and Frederick and ended up at Elmira where they perished. At that time I believe the 16th was part of Gen. McCausland's Brigade and I know they were involved at Monocacy on those dates. I am trying to understand the circumstances that led to their capture. From my understanding, Monocacy was a Confederate victory although Early's Army was delayed and prevented from taking D.C. Is anyone aware of any documents that might provide more detail on the 16th activities on July 9/10 1864. Ultimately these two brothers took different routes to Elmira. John C. shows going to Lookout Point and then to the Capital Prison and on to Elmira. I find records that show he died at Lookout but he also shows dying at Elmira. Both brothers have headstones at Woodlawn (Elmira) but John C. shows a death date of 1 May 1865, which is about a month after the war ended? I have read several books on the Battle of Monocacy but they do not talk much about McCausland's Brigade. Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
