Here is what I have on Charles J. Ziglar. The records of the 54th Ala, which was commanded by John A. Minter, are pretty thin. I could find no contemporary evidence of Charles' service after his parole at Vicksburg. The date he gave in his pension application for his discharge, 4/20/65, was the date of the surrender to Gen. William Sherman by Joseph E. Johnson at Durham Station, NC. In pension applications I have seen from Virginia, the statement is often made that the man served until Lee's surrender. In many instances, that statement does not mean the man was present at Appomattox. Rather, it meant the man was absent from the unit and considered his service done at the date of the surrender. ZIGLAR, CHARLES JONES.: Pvt., Co. F. Born Old Town, Forsyth County, N.C., 11/14 or 19/30. Trader, age 18, Henry County, 1850. 1860 cen., farmer, age 30, Newton P.O., Dale County, Ala. Enl. 3/17/62, Henry County. Paid enlistment bounty 3/27/62. Hospitalized Richmond by 6/17/62 when he went AWOL from there. Remained absent from unit through 1/1/63. Joined A/54th Ala. Inf. about 4/4/63 at Greenwood, Miss. Paid at Vicksburg, Miss., 6/30/63 for service from 4/4/63. Captured at Vicksburg 7/4/63; signed parole there 7/9/63 and paroled 7/10/63. No further record. Postwar farmer, Dale County, Ala., 1870; Coffee County, Ala., 1880; and Dale County 1900. Applied for pension there 3/12/1900, claiming to have joined A/54th Ala. in 1863, and to have served honorably until discharged 4/26/65. Reapplied for pension in Dale County 1907, saying he transferred from 42nd Va. to 54th Ala. in 5/63. Living, age 79, Dale County, 1910. Died there 6/7/1916 and buried Mount Olive Cem.
