Cane Creek and Janney Furnaces
In Response To: Re: Furnace ()

I got most of the following from History of Coal and Iron in Alabama (Ethel Armes):

There were 3 furnaces in Calhoun County that produced iron for the Confederacy: Cane Creek (or Benton) Iron Works, Oxford Furnace, and Janney Furnace. Gen. Rousseau's raiders burned the Janney and Cane Creek furnaces, although the Janney furnace was left standing. The Janney furnace was incomplete at the time, never having begun production. Neither furnace would be put back into production before the end of the war.

The Cane Creek works, which began production in the early eighteen-forties, was described as located in Calhoun County at the south end of Chalybeate Mountain just below a fall in the creek about 6 or 7 miles from its junction with the Coosa River. Another account describes the settlement around the works, which included a commissary store, post office, a general merchandise store, a doctor's office, a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, and a small machine shop. The center of business activity for the whole region, the settlement was situated on a 25 acres peninsula, and included houses and farms.

Some 5 miles northwest of the Cane Creek Furnace and about 2 miles east of Ten Islands ford on the Coosa River, is A.A. Janney's charcoal furnace.

The Oxford works is located on the west side of Furnace Hill in the present city of Anniston.
