Military Actions in Lauderdale County

I've been working on a map of Alabama military actions during the war. It's been available for a number of years, but the publisher wanted to offer a better product and requested additional research. Starting in Lauderdale County, site numbers are grouped within present-day county lines, usually from west to east. Actions taking place near the same site have the same number. These are described in sidebar panels listing each one.

The original contained omissions, duplications, date, place and spelling errors, along with some unfortunate wording. Significant repairs are needed. Without making the print so small that reading will require use of a magnifying glass, space for text is limited. It's important to make economical use of words here.

This is what I have for Lauderdale County. Most information below has been taken from the Official Records and the National Archives Guide to the Official Records. Fire away with additions, corrections or suggestions.

Lauderdale County

  1. WATERLOO -- Skirmish, Feb. 12, 1865
  2. COLBERT RESERVE -- Skirmish, Jan. 29, 1864
  3. FLORENCE -- Two Union gunboats reached the city on Feb. 8, 1862. Three steamers and their cargoes were burned rather than let them fall into Northern hands. Union naval expeditions arriving on Feb. 22, 1863, and Mar. 25, 1863, met stout opposition and failed to cause much damage. However, Col. Cornyn's raid of May 28, 1863, destroyed many businesses, including a mill producing Confederate uniforms. Col. Phillips and his 9th Ill. Regt. captured forty troopers from Roddey's Alabama cavalry on Dec. 1, 1863. On the night of Apr. 12-13, 1864, Confederates surprised Co. "G", 9th Ohio Cav. on the Peters Planation near Florence. Three Ohio troopers were killed and forty-one captured.
  4. BAINBRIDGE FERRY -- Skirmishes, Jan. 25, 1864, and May 7, 1864. Batteries posted here Dec. 27, 1864, drove off Union gunboats sent to prevent Confederates from reaching safety across the Tennessee River.
  5. SHOAL CREEK -- Skirmishes, Jan. 14 and 26, 1864. On Oct. 5-6, 1864, Lt. Col. Windes held Federal pursuit at bay here with his 4th Alabama Cav., allowing Gen. Forrest's command to escape. After Confederates crossed the Tennessee on Oct. 30, 1864, Gen. Croxton defended Shoal Creek bridge, Nov. 4-6 and Nov. 9, 1864.
  6. BUTLER CREEK/BAUGH FACTORY -- Skirmishes, Nov. 5-20, 1864. For two weeks Confederate and Union cavalrymen fought almost daily for control of this area.
  7. BELLEVUE -- Skirmish, Nov. 3, 1864.
  8. CENTRE STAR -- Skirmish, May 18, 1864
  9. LAMB'S FERRY -- Skirmish, May 14, 1862.
  10. WATKINS PLANTATION -- Affair, July 31, 1864.

Summaries for other Tennessee Valley counties are nearly complete. I hope to post them in coming days.
