Officers and men of the 27th and 35th Alabama Regiments were involved in the attack. The original target was a Federal encampment at the Jackson Plantation ("Forks of Cypress"), but it was too far from the point where these Confederates crossed the Tennessee River. The plan called for this detachment to make the attack and return by dawn, which limited their scope of action.
