30th Alabama Infantry
In Response To: Re: Talladega recruits - 1861 ()

Alan,
In the April 9, 1862 edition of the "Democratic Watchtower" I found the following:
"Camp Curry, April 7, 1862
The following is the organization of the regiment stationed at this place. The letters indicate the rank of the companies, and the numbers their position in line of battle:
Colonel.....Charles M. Shelley
Lieut. Colonel.....Taul Bradford
Major......John Smith
Acting Surgeon....Dr. William Patterson
Act. Asst Surgeon.....Dr. F. Gorman
Acting Commissary.....Lieut. H.P. Oden
Act Asst. " .......A.J. Storey
Acting Adjutant.....W.H. Burr

............................No. of Company
Company A, (1) Capt. Francis 100
Company B, (10) Capt. T.H. Patterson 82
Company C, (5) Capt. Anderson 82
Company D, (3) Capt. Samuel 104
Company E, (7) Captain W. Patterson 96
Company F, (2) Captain Sawyer 94
Company G, (9) Capt. McBee 83
Company H, (6) Capt. Woodward 80
Company J, (4) Capt. Lee 97
Company K, (8) Capt. Wood 102"

This is, I believe, a more accurate description of the original organization than I've seen elsewhere. Other published sources don't have a few of these original officers listed.
Regards,
Jim
