Good quote -- where'd you find it? Up until the war, I'd assume membership was by invitation only, like a college fraternity. By the late 1850's, we might also assume that members were politically aligned with "Southern Rights" candidates and appeared at their rallies. We might also recall that companies like this were called into state service after Alabama left the Union and were ordered to occupy the Mount Vernon armory and the bay forts.
