I answered earlier today, but I see that it did not post. I'll try again to explain what I do know and to define the two people, Matthew Baynes and Mathias Banes both born in AL, both fought for AL in civil war.

Matthew Baynes, my gggrandfather served with the 1st AL regiment confirmed in replies to these posts. He signed up and married in Choctaw county, AL. He was born about 1840 in AL according to census records. He married Jane S. Syfrett who may have been an orphan living with relatives in Alabama when they met. His first daughter was my ggrandmother who was born in AL according to census records. Clarke county has a great genealogist who had recorded online Matthew's pension records that said he fought with the 1st Alabama, and Co. B, 37th MS. I posted these pension records with MS board last year in response to another researcher who did not have any connection or anything written down, but posting about him.

Thanks to responses I now know Mathias, son of Wiley Banes is not the same as our Matthew. They were about the same age. The Baynes name can be spelled Banes, Bains, Baines, and for some now Bayne(TX). So although the Co. G, 5th Alabama was not where my ancestor served, I know what happened to Mathias who has been in my searches. Mathias brother Henry who was injured and his father can be found in 1870 Lauderdale county, MS census. Simeon R Baines the oldest son moved later from AL and can be found in the 1880 census Lauderdale county, MS. Some researchers have connected Mathias to my Matthew. They also say Simeon's R stands for Richmond. If that is true, maybe I should be asking about Simeon R Baines in Alabama. Simeon could have fought, but I haven't searched him.

Richmond B Baines is listed with the Co B, 37th Regiment, MS, but no one has responded with any Mississippi research. Co B, 37th MS lists both Richmond B Baines and Matthew Baines. Richmond B Baynes (b 1918) is the son of Henry Lord Baynes who I believe is a son of the elder Richmond. Henry Lord Baynes ended up in Lamar county, MS (Hattiesburg area)

Mathias Banes - Co G, 5th AL, brother Henry, and a J Banes - Marengo county, AL > Sumter county, AL >Lauderdale county, MS (without deceased Mathias)

Matthew (M R or Matt R Baines(died Baynes) - 1st AL reg. Choctaw county, AL - no census records found. and Co. B, 37th MS, Clarke county, MS, died in Desoto, Clarke county, MS.
