Alan, It is entirely possibe that what you say is correct. However, I have copies of a roll from the Condederate Prison at Camp Randall from May of 1862 that has Matt R. Banes on it. It states that he was captured at Island #10 on April 8. received on April 20; I have additional copies with his name that say he was at Camp Douglas (ill) and another that says he was taken to Vicksburg. I , therefore, do not believe he was a deserter.....at least not at that point. Many of the men who were captured in the "works" at Island # 10 were ill. That he survived Camp Douglas is a small miracle. Why would he feel the need to "pad" his application?
