Joining Rodes after Sharpsburg

I am curious if there are letters, reports or diaries out there that explain what route new recruits would have utilized to get from Richmond to Rodes' Alabama brigade ( camped in northern Va.) after Sharpsburg fight. My folks ( Co. B; 6th Alabama ) left Camp Watts in late September and went by rail to Va. I've got that much covered. But how would they have gotten to the area north of Winchester, Va. from Richmond? Rail to Staunton and walk ? Rail as far north as Manassas Jct. and them walk ? Who would have led them to join their regiment ? A non-com ?
