The relatively short gap between Strasburg and Winchester is covered by the Valley Pike.

Other gaps existed when the rail gauge changed. In that case a traveler had to find other means to get from one station to another. Example: someone arriving in Montgomery from south Alabama had to find transportation across town to reach the station where another train could take him to Atlanta.
