Re: Huntsville, AL - April 11, 1862

It would appear he was not wounded when captured which would point to death due to some disease in the prison hospital.

W[William] H. Toler, Private, Company K, 9th Louisiana Infantry, enlisted March 1, 1862 at Vernon, La. by J. R. Kavanangh for the duration of the war, captured at Huntsville, Ala. April 11, 1862,* died in General Hospital at Camp Chase, Ohio prison, July 20, 1862 (cause not stated)

* The re-enlisted men of Company K, 9th Regiment Louisiana Infantry, while returning from furlough, with a number of recruits, were captured at Huntsville, Ala., about April 12, 1862. After having been exchanged at Vicksburg, Miss., they were attached to the 12th Regiment Louisiana Infantry and became (2nd) Company M of that regiment

His records are filed under the name William H. Toler, 2nd Company M, 12th Louisiana Infantry

Record of Events, 2nd Company M, 12th Regiment La. Inf.,
Formerly Company K, 9th Regiment La. Inf.

Roll Dated Sept. 22, 1862

The above embraces a reenlisted fragment of a twelve months Company originally belonging to the 9th La. Regiment and a number of recruits, designed with hat [sic] fragment to form a new company under the provisions of the act of Congress 1861, in reference to the reenlistment of twelve months troops. The reenlisted men were furloughed and were returning to Virginia in company with said recruits & under my command when they and myself were taking prisoners at Huntsville, Ala. 11th April, 1862. Several of my men escaped of whom I have no further information. Some of these men not with me. I have heard from only a few of them & such information as I possess, I give according to my instructions. A portion of the bounty due the recruits was paid by the recruiting officers about half remains unpaid. As I have been informed the said bounty will not be paid on this roll. I have made no item of it in the column of remarks.
The imperfections of this roll are unavoidable as all the necessary papers were either destroyed or fell into the hands of the enemy. G. W. McCranie, Capt. Co. K, 9lth La. Regt.
