Re: Huntsville, AL - April 11, 1862

George, I spent a lot of time with this incident including visiting the railroad depot in Huntsville, AL. I believe the story should make some sense to those who study the War. I am convinced that after looking where Company K, 9th Regiment Louisiana Infantry was sleeping in and around the cars at the yard that it would have been nearly impossible for them not to know they were under attack. A few quick acting people such as Lt. Kidd did manage to escape with some of his men. I was really surprised to learn of how nearby the depot was in relationship to where Company K was. An officer named Simonton who was an expert with the artillery fired a warning shot a at train ready to leave Huntsville, Alabama that morning around dawn. If a cannon did not wake those Confederates up I don't know what would have. The captured prisoners went on to Nashville, Tennessee where 9 of them died and then on to Louisville, Kentucky where they were held. The building they were held in at Louisville, KY., is still standing and so is the original depot at Huntsville, AL. The Confederates were first held on the second and third floors. From Louisville, KY they went on to Camp Chase. Some officers like the ones in the 5th Georgia were waiting for baggage. Three 5th Georgia Captains were captured. Their regiment had moved out prior to the attack and they were left behind to get the companies baggage. All this of course was because of the Andrew's Raid that took place on April 12, 1862. Andrews and General Mitchell plans did not dovetail because of the weather issue.
