The roll for Goldsmith's Company, a state militia unit, lists John Harlow of Butler County, age 35, exempt by reason of substitute in the Confederate army. This company of exempts organized in the 2nd half of 1863. So John Harlow was at home until Congress abolished substitution in December 1863. At that point a conscript officer would have taken him to Camp Watts.
Based on experience with other exempts, my guess is that John Harlow was assigned to the 22nd Alabama from camp sometime in the summer of 1864, perhaps even later.
