There appear to be no muster rolls for the Companies of the 5th Alabama Cavalry which would explain the lack of a record of his service. Of the men recorded, their information was obtained from other than muster rolls, such as pay/clothing receipts, POW records, Capture & Surrender rolls, etc.

One need recognize that the Compiled Service Records were taken mostly from recovered Muster Rolls, other information was taken from various documents which survived the war to be compiled ca 1880 and later.

..........

W. D. Irvin who attested to his service, has one card in his file of Company C, 5th Alabama Cavalry, that being a receipt roll for clothing dated March, 1864, nothing more.
