I guess what is going on here is to try to determine what was classified as a "Hospital". The term seems to be used rather loosely.

We all know of various locations scattered across the state which tended to sick or wounded soldiers, all the way from a few tents set aside at an encampment to the largest complex at Little Rock. But were all these locations truely "Hospitals"?

There is no doubt that some sort of medical facility was located at Brownsville and probably it was large enough to be considerd as a "hospital". Was it "THE" Railroad Hospital, I am not sure. As Bryan suggested it may well have been somewhere else.

I am sure that given Brownsville central location on the railroad to little Rock and Deval's Bluff, plus being located close to encampments along the Confedertae Front along the White River, Brownsville would have at least been a collection point for seriously ill soldiers.

The only way that I have been able to determine what was a "hospital" and what wasn't, was to consult the list of surgeons assigned to various location by the medical department at Little Rock. A list of these surgeons exist at the History Commission (I believe) and was published as an appendix in Clements Confederate Military History of Arkansas and Louisiana. For example Pine Bluff/Sulphur Springs facility had 4 surgeons assigned to it from 1862 to 63.
