The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Whose Twenty Thousand Troops?

Also, the NPS Soldiers and Sailors System numbers are skewed. The list of soldiers includes all the permutations of the spelling of each soldier's name, as they appear in the various documents comprising the Compiled Service Records. Many men are thus counted twice, some as many as half a dozen or more times.

To this fact must be added the fact that, in some regiments, an entire group of names is missing from the transcription. For example, in many of the Arkansas regiments, soldiers whose surnames began with the letter "K" are not included.

So the NPS numbers are completely unreliable.
