Re: Whose Twenty Thousand Troops?

While we are speaking on these terms of straggling, I believe that Stackpole in his book said that Jackson Foot Cavalry marched at a pace of one mile every 25 minutes, with a 10 minute break every hour. This was to minimize straggling as much as possible. The difference between his marches and the Union marches was that the Union Army under McClellan would only march about 10 to 12 miles a day. Where as Jackson would march 10 to 12 hours a day.

All I have got to say is that Grandpa was a "H--- of a man" to march 30 to 35 miles in 24 hours in the 3rd Arkansas. But that seemed to be the thing with the western boys on both side, The Iron Brigade, Hood's Texas Bridage, or Walkers Texas Grayhounds, is that they streached out their legs when they got to marching.
