Doug,

Well here's my theory. The Union Army was fighting a rear guard action at the Moscow Church, taking Hwy. 19 would not make any sense because the Rebs had followed the Union rear guard east of Hwy. 19, that tells me that Steele had already proceeded East or South East with his large army. Steele had to take Cale Road (South East) out of Moscow. Cale Road is now Nevada County 23. In Arkansas they are County Roads #. Anyway, Steele could not continue due East because that would take him north of the swamp area and back out into the open prairie. The southern edge of Prairie D'Ann is at Moscow and then south is dense woods and swamps. Taking the due east, however, would put them on Hwy. 24 which ends up in Bluff City. So it is possible that the Hwy. 24 route was taken but unlikely in my opinion. Cale Rd. does take you to Morris but I think that would put them on the Lower Washington-Camden road but I'm not ruling that out also. The swamps that many publications refer to is the Terre Rouge Creek Swamps which go in a northeast-southeast direction. Looking at our sophisticated maps help in today's sense of deciding the better route to take, however, they had pitiful maps relying mostly on local guides. Its hard to find, if not impossible, old road maps that far back. If the Union Army took Hwy. 24 then the swamps would never have been mentioned, so I'm betting on Cale Road to the South East but where they turned east has been dumbfounded. There was an upper road (along the route of Hwy. 24 and a lower route (Morris Area). Just for additional information, Moscow Church was the farthest point west that the Union Army went. Once at that point they headed toward Camden. The Yanks were getting the hell beat out of them on the lower Red River and Steele was very low on supplies. He should have known that he would have to expend a lot of supplies (ammo etc) to fight Price and then make it in time to help out in Shreveport, so he made the most logical decision possible. If he went to Camden via Bluff City, why didn't he pick up the needed supplies passing thru Poison Springs the first time instead of reaching Camden and sending a large foraging party out after arriving in Camden back to Poison Springs? Don't know but that's what makes researching so enjoyable. I've also often wondered if Steele had actually made it to Washington, although supplies there were plentiful, Gen. Banks would have already retreated back to the Gulf and would have left Steele trying to fight his way back to Little Rock which he ended up doing anyway, just a different route. I've enjoyed talking with you on this matter and to let you know I'm an Okie. If you come up with anything please let me know.
