yep. the red river campaign is endlessly interesting to me. Grant-Lee were stalemated in Virgina, Sherman was checked in front of Atlanta, and Banks ("the bobbin boy") was trying to invade sw ark., north la. and east texas because the textile mills in the ne were pressuring Lincoln for cotton (the army said CSA stamped on bales stood for "cotton stealing army"-slaves after they were freed were turned right back into the fields to pick cotton for the federals). like i said, my ancestors lived in the area, my grandfather-his father,grandfather and g-grandfather, and other relations all owned farms not far from Prescott. 1864 was sure a dire time for the area. If I remember right there is a monument in or near Prescott with the names of Union soldiers who died in the area and were left behind on the campaign and I always thought that showed alot of empathy by the locals of the area who would remember their "enemy."
