Mr. Almond, just on a whim, I happened to find this web site. My Great Grandfather, pvt. Casper Snook, Co. F, 3rd Iowa Volunteer Cavalry was wounded at Prairie D'Ann. He enlisted in Nov. 1863 in Fairfield, Iowa. Before the war he was a carpetner. I have obtained from the National Archives his enlistment, discharge, pay records, and pension applications. According from what I read, he had taken some wounded to the hospital and as he was proceeding left across the line, he was struck by a ball in his left calf, the bullet went into and killed his horse. He was taken to Camden for treatment. He also stated that he was struck by a saber in the head by a confederate officer. Casper spent the rest of the war in and out of hospitals. He was discharged in Nashville in Aug. 1865, attached to 138 Colored Infantry as a hospital steward. Before the battle, it looks like he was stationed in Little Rock.

I do not know much about the battle, I am curious how it played out. I would be willing to share what I have. After the war Casper settled in Chillicothe, Mo. and died in 1919. I have visited his grave. Larry Snook
