The Murfreesboro casualty list is the most detailed. It lists location and severity of wound. The Shiloh and Chickamauga lists simply indicate wounded (with no comment as to severity), killed, missing, etc.
The Federals captured the Murfreesboro wounded in the various Confederate field hospitals on January 5, 1863. The 8th Arkansas muster rolls continue to list the men simply as wounded for quite a few months, with no indication that they had actually been wounded and subsequently captured. Same with the missing -- most of them were actually captured.
One of the really frustrating things about the 8th Arkansas muster rolls is the indication of "present" or "absent". A lot of men were carried in the "present" column, with remarks like "On detached duty at the Atlanta armory." Pay records confirm that the man was paid at Atlanta, at the same time the muster roll claims he was present "on detached duty" with the regiment. The problem is that the adjutant's clerk made extensive use of ditto marks, and apparently got pretty careless with them. I did a lot of hair-pulling when going through my transcriptions. Receipts for pay, clothing, and commutation of rations, as well as hospital admission records, were key in straightening everything out.
